Mike Dempsey (from CDT) made some interesting comments in Design Week t'other day. And it's not every day you get interesting comments in Design Week, so people took note.
He said, "Graphics has hit a watershed, not knowing which way to go from here. With all stylistic trends plundered, is there anywhere to go but backwards?"
Michael Johnson has responded with a really interesting article here. Not just about Mike's comments, but about the design industry in general. The history of the industry, the future of the industry and what it's like to be a practicing designer right now. Well worth a Saturday afternoon read.
Well surely your answer Ben is this:

Yawn... The comment in Design Week is age old nothing new at all and utter rubbish. Graphic Design is fresher than ever. There are tons of wonderful young designers out there, maybe not on the pages of design week, but maybe thats the problem we should be talking about here.

Does Mike Dempsey say better work was being done in the 80's because that was his heyday, hperhaps he just doesn't understand modern graphics.
