Are you a graphic designer? Do you have a tattoo?

Alex and I were talking the other day about tattoos. I hate tattoos. Alex said that all the graphic designers he knew didn't like tattoos because they could never pick one mark, or design, that they could be sure of liking forever. Let alone a font, "The font is always something Latino and gangster". Couple that with the horrible colour distortion of tattoos over time and you've got a designers nightmare.

But obviously there are designers with tattoos.

And some marks would be OK for life, wouldn't they?

Ijustine

Let's do a quick poll. Are you a graphic designer? Do you have a tattoo?

Commissioned by Tower Hamlets Council

Tom went to have a look at this the other day. Great use of double yellows. (Triple yellows over here.) Apparently it's huge. Look at the parking sign on the lamp post for an idea of scale.

Anyway, he also spotted this.

That can't be right, can it? We don't think it is. What do you think?

More typographic advice

David Airey has written about my (or should that be our?) post on typographic advice for 3rd year design students. His listeners leave some helpful comments too.

What should I do with these?

One of the things that struck me about Alan Fletcher was the fact that he actually did stuff. I'm sure millions of designers have collections of letters but very few would actually make them into something.

So, inspired by this I'm going to do more things with all the stuff I've collected over the years.

For example I've got all these photos.

Signpictures

They're all of typography, mainly signs. I've always wanted to turn them into a book or something. I haven't added to the collection for a few years, so when I look back now they were mainly taken between 1998 and 2003. Australia, Spain, France, UK, San Francisco, Vegas, Colorado, Chicago, New York, New Orleans, Memphis and Monaco are the locations.

So what should I do? A book? A series of posters? An exhibition?

What do you reckon listeners?

Beautiful

I met up with Iain the other day. I wasn't going to blog about it but I was looking through my iPhoto and I found these pictures. I'd forgotten I'd taken them.

Fb

This was in the café where we met. Except it's actually backwards which explains the picture I posted yesterday. So you only see the above picture when you look in the mirror. Like this.

Fbbigger

I really like that. I suspect it's by an artist but, right now, I'm too lazy to Google it. I suspect it's the same guy who did this.

Whodidthis

Which is something I saw here about three years ago.

On the way back to the office I saw these.

Hackneycows

This is probably really old news and it's probably been blogged about a trillion times but I saw it and I like it. It's just a nice thing to do. You could show it to your Gran and she would 'get it' and that's the kind of design I like, design your Gran 'gets'.

It's great to see Councils doing more stuff like this especially as it's around an important issue like recycling. It reminded me of something I'd seen in New Cross.

(Picture taken from Orhan with huge thanks, usual stuff applies.)

That's it.

Is it only graphic designers?

Went for a nice walk this morning. Saw some great type painted on walls. Why don't people do this any more. It looks great.

Painting1

Painting2

We once had a fairly large building client who moved to a new building. They asked us to design a sign for the front and we suggested getting someone to paint on the brick wall. No, no, they said, that's too old fashioned.

Is it only graphic designers who think this looks great, or does everyone think it looks great?

Chicago 2: More painted logos

Saw this building in Streeterville Chicago. I love all this painting on buildings stuff. The should be more of it. Doesn't this brighten up the street? Nicely designed website too, nicely designed but the usability is shite.

What a lovely logo

I saw this Boots logo on a wall the other day.

Great isn't it? There ought to be more of this. Rise up and paint your logos on your walls brand owners.
